That used to be his school because they had school at the church. It’s a church his grandfather built, so it’s been there since 1902, and my granddaddy was born right down the road from the church. I started singing when I was three, with my grandfather in church. What were your earliest musical experiences? I sat down recently with the young master for a discussion about growing up in Georgia and how he got his start in the blues. As the artistic director of the Centrum blues week in Port Townsend, Washington, Willis has demonstrated not only a mastery of the music but a solid understanding of blues history and the music business as it exists today. A multi-instrumentalist, he also plays harmonica and banjo. The album earned him a nomination for the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album and, most recently, a Living Blues Award for the best Traditional & Acoustic recording. 12 on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart in May 2019.
